It’s a big party
the whole world is invited
celebrate and kiss
inside I am wondering
why they cheer and hasten death
warm-blooded lover
in an instant has become
cold-blooded killer
what provoked such a turning?
a single act of passion.
too close the world burns
dissolved by fiery heat but
too far turns to ice
such a delicate balance
makes me walk more carefully
tinged and tainted trees
reflect the crimson sunset
burning on each leaf
from my window I can see
slowly spreading autumn fire
blackened petals fall
withered, shriveled, discarded
shades of purple past
perfect picture of my heart
bruised, forgotten without you
reflections shimmer
placid lake lies undisturbed
mirroring the sky
i know the smallest pebble
will break this perfect picture
wilted flowers lie
upon this cold granite slab
their sweet life cut short
the irony of giving
something dying to the dead
breeze at night blows in
dry air soon will fill with rain
unseen moisture hangs
although i cannot see it
scent of rain is in the air
crisp night air invades
the earth wraps itself in fog
attempts to stay warm
i pull the covers closer
when your warmth i cannot share
silent startling flash
a brief moment of suspense
rolling thunder cracks
reverberates in my soul
my racing heart slowly calms
