Time Well Spent

The air grows cooler as the sky grows dark;
the sun drops slow behind the distant trees,
and though it tried all day to leave its mark
the night returns to do as it would please.
Another day has passed its time now spent
no going back or chance to do again
methodically the fleeting minutes went
until at last they reached this moment when
the setting sun would glow its last few rays.
I waste no time in mourning what I’ve lost
these crimson skies deserve only my praise
and I know that no matter what the cost
though time be fleeting and our days be few
still I would want to spend it all with you.

My Little Angel

Her eyes are heavy but her heart is light
satisfied by the day that she’s now spent
for although she hurried from place to place
not resting as her long day turned to night
nothing could pull the soft smile from her face.
She knows nothing of the reality
of how she should worry about the way
her smile can control the sun in my sky;
never knowing how everywhere she went
her carefree laugh had a deep hold on me.
The power she has to turn my night to day
with the smallest squeeze of her hand in mine
and the way she can make my worries fly
shows the perfection of heaven’s design.

Heaven Answered

Those nights I spent just staring at the sky.
The hours my faithful prayers with heav’n were shared
as fervently I pleaded to know why
my life was empty and nobody cared.
The nights stretched on and hope grew ever dim.
Perhaps a life alone was meant for me,
could I be destined for a fate so grim?
To live and die as chance alone would see.
But prayers I sent into the air above
were heard and answered more then I could know
and I was blessed by your angelic love
far greater then the hope that I could show.
—
  While others watch and claim it’s merely fate-
  Still I know good things come to those who wait.

No More Night

The hours dissolve into the shadows deep
as darkness rises o’er the shine of day,
though earth should try the setting sun to keep
a blood red glow the only sign to stay.
For though the stars are beautiful and bright,
and though the moon assurances would give
no twilight wonder can provide the light
which gives to man the surety to live.
For when the sun is shining overhead
we think not on the brevity of time;
but in the night we’re closest to the dead
and from this grave our souls are quick to climb.
  But I have something that will see me through-
  I have my sun whenever I have you.

Within My Dreams

Upon the wings of love I fly tonight
your gracious words of hope and love my wind
I rise above the cares of mortal flight
into ethereal realms I ascend
the glowing moon reflects in silver beams
across the clouds which glide beneath my soul
a silent witness to your whispered dreams
even the heav’ns are under your control
but even as I make my way to you
I close my eyes to fight the coming dawn
with weak attempts my heart denies what’s true
I know that when I wake you will be gone
   this life I live beyond reality
   will soon be right when you return to me

For a Moment, For Ever

The brevity of life so oft forgot,
here for a while, then vanishing away.
We carry on without a second thought
with willful ignorance we try to stay
forever young, deny mortality,
and only think of what we want to do:
to seek out happiness, where e’re it be.
Alone, we search for love to see us through.
But few will fill the longing in their hearts,
and fewer still will ever know the truth-
how life will end as quickly as it starts,
and you cannot reclaim your dying youth.
  Eternal bliss is found where love is true.
  That’s why I smile each time I look at you.

Soft and Steady

I love to listen to the gentle rain
that falls in random tapping all around
and I am quick my eager ears to strain,
as each dripping drop fades into the ground.
I cannot see their presence in the air
though I would try their movement to discern
their evidence of life is everywhere;
in damp spots spreading without a pattern.
But though they fall invisible to see,
still I enjoy the soothing subtle sound,
it calms my soul and sets my spirit free.
And so I stand and let the rain surround.
Be still and stand within the misty grey;
join me and hear what the rain has to say.

Lights In The Distance

I stare with wondering eyes into the night,
alone beneath the stars my soul is free
to watch the distant cars that fade from sight,
their glowing lights the only thing I see.
I think of when I once was one of those
a carefree spirit traveling where led;
the distant setting sun my future chose
as I relinquished to its path instead.
But I no longer heed the nightly call
to follow after vanishing degrees.
I rather choose to watch it slowly fall
with wistful eyes as it my heart does tease.
But I am stronger for I know that still
the choice is mine to follow if I will.

Winter’s Chill

Something about the cold that hits my face,
when tired, weary and worn I start to leave;
the winter weather rushes in the door
as if to find some solace from the chill,
a refuge in the warmth that’s in this place-
I pause but for a moment to clasp tight
my jacket collar round my exposed skin.
And sadly I’m left wishing I had more
protection from this wily winter thief.
But like the winter air I know you will
arrest my breath and steal my life within.
Your coldness slaps my heart and blinds my sight.
No coat could e’er protect me from your frost.
Without your love my soul’s true warmth is lost.
